Internet prophets used to call these "affinity groups," while cynics called them "tribes." <br /><br />The other thing I think is a BIG idea is that these changes in political rhetoric are often about making space for new candidates, more than they're about new ideas. Often, the ideas are actually old ones. If this is the case, our national dialog as citizens ought to be about defining long-term values and figuring out how to move toward them. We have short memories and typica...Great post, HCR! We have short memories and typically assume that all political and historical phenomena are recent in origin. We also tend to think that something like partisanship is "worse now than it has ever been." Thanks for sharing this long-range perspective, and for reminding us that division and unity are purposefully forged and perpetuated on both sides of the political spectrum, rather than just spontaneously fashioning themselves out of thin air.PWnoreply@blogger.com
