In fact, any inquisitive person can use the internet to learn virtually anything. However, I suspect that it isn't helpful when one is starting from near zero. When I read the article on "Bourbon Democrats,": I already knew something about the Commune, French Impressionism (enough so that I can see why there might be a connection), the Civil War (as related to political parties, to various states, to the issue of race), and the OED. Of course, with the internet, it would be possible to find out about these things without taking some 4-5 courses! Besides, the internet is an enormous boon for those of us with fading short term memories.J Sacklernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7872819010848426693.post-59936740720348977522011-05-06T14:37:04.889-04:002011-05-06T14:37:04.889-04:00Thanks for this, Chad! Seems to me this would make an interesting seminar paper for a graduate student (hint, hint, if anyone ever goes back and reads this!)hcrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07334093881332383848noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7872819010848426693.post-51227078465092321322011-04-14T07:57:47.746-04:002011-04-14T07:57:47.746-04:00Apparently it was also the name of a Kentucky News...Apparently it was also the name of a Kentucky Newspaper. A google ngram and book search doesn't have the term in much use before about 1874, but did return the mention linked above from 1867. It's a list of expenses for the Kentucky Senate from 1867, including the newspapers the Senate paid for during session. They paid one S.P. Cunningham 13 dollars for provisioning the Senate with the "Bourbon Democrat."

In glancing the through search returns of the 1880s it strikes me that people used the term assuming everyone understood what it meant, needing no explanation.Chad Blackhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03708388476830570078noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7872819010848426693.post-69407242684630722342011-03-18T11:48:25.747-04:002011-03-18T11:48:25.747-04:00I *love* this post. I never thought of what kind of connections could have taken place in America - let alone the "Bourbon Democrat" connection.

And yes, you can do a lot of research from home. The Internet is an amazing resource for inquisitive historians and bloggers!

I discovered this blog recently and have really enjoyed the material presented by the contributors.
