Seems to work well for his class. Is a nice way to get them to think about the research process and bringing persons back to life.

Thanks for mentioning that.Randallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16755286304057000048noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7872819010848426693.post-30892578805845603172010-02-04T05:43:43.085-05:002010-02-04T05:43:43.085-05:00I just saw _The History Boys_ and was also struck ...I just saw _The History Boys_ and was also struck by its possibilities for classroom use. I was (superficially?) taken with the idea of "history in the subjunctive." I think students understand how conditional causes and events are in the present, but don't realize that it was that way in the past, too. They think the past was inevitable in ways the present is not--at least mine do, anyway.

In any case, I appreciate your suggestion of seeing interviews with historians as perhaps the best way to provoke student understanding of how to deal with sources-- and interviews of that sort are something you've contributed a bit towards yourself, Randall--do you ever show your own work in class?

Also, has anyone had luck with "A Midwife's Tale"? I remember using that once at Chicago for an undergrad survey on American history and seem to recall Ulrich dealing with sources at some length....Lisa Clark Dillerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00155783885263417225noreply@blogger.com
